Description

Celebrate Halloween with this spooky Black Milkshake, made with rich vanilla ice cream, black cocoa powder, and maple syrup for a delightfully dark treat. Topped optionally with a whipped cream and black sanding sugar rim, this milkshake is perfect for festive fun or a chillingly delicious dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Optional Whipped Cream Topping and Rim

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream or whipping cream
  • Black sanding sugar

Milkshake Ingredients

  • 2 cups (475 ml) vanilla ice cream, packed
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup (60 to 120 ml) milk (any type except canned coconut milk)
  • 3 tablespoons (26 grams) black cocoa powder, plus more if needed
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make Whipped Cream (optional): Add the heavy cream to a bowl and whip at medium speed until it begins to thicken. Increase to high speed and continue whipping until stiff peaks form. Chill in the fridge until ready to use.
  2. Prepare Sugar Rim (optional): Pour black sanding sugar into a shallow bowl. Brush maple syrup onto the rim of your glass or dip the rim into maple syrup, then immediately dip into sanding sugar. Tap off excess and freeze for a few minutes to set the sugar.
  3. Blend Milkshake: In a blender, combine the vanilla ice cream, milk, black cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth with no ice cream lumps. If too thick, add more milk until desired consistency is reached. Taste and add extra black cocoa powder if a darker flavor is preferred. Note the shake may look dark grey initially but will darken over time.
  4. Assemble and Serve: Pour the milkshake into prepared glasses. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles if desired. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • You can use any type of milk except canned coconut milk; unsweetened cashew milk works for a paleo/vegan version.
  • Omit sprinkles if following paleo or vegan diets.
  • Depending on the density and air content of the ice cream, milk may not be needed or can be adjusted for thickness.
  • The shake yields about 2 1/2 cups (591 ml) using dense ice cream and milk, or about 1 1/3 cups (307 ml) if using airy vegan ice cream without milk.
