Bread & Spreads
- 4 slices of hearty bread
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 1/4 cup apple butter
Fillings
- 4 oz sharp cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
- 1 apple, thinly sliced
- 1/2 pound sliced deli turkey or thin pieces of turkey leftovers
- 8 leaves fresh sage
Instructions
- Preheat the Panini Maker: Turn on your panini maker and allow it to reach the proper temperature to ensure even grilling and crisping of the bread.
- Prepare Ingredients: Have all ingredients prepped and ready to assemble quickly as you will need to work fast once the bread hits the heated panini maker.
- Butter the Bread: Evenly spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread to create a golden crispy crust during grilling.
- Start Assembling: Place one slice of bread on the panini maker, buttered side down to toast properly.
- Spread Apple Butter: Quickly spread apple butter evenly on the bread slice that is on the panini maker.
- Add Cheese and Apples: Layer the sharp cheddar cheese slices followed by thinly sliced apples on top of the apple butter.
- Add Turkey and Sage: Spread sliced turkey evenly over the apples, then place fresh sage leaves on the turkey.
- Finish with Apples and Cheese: Add another layer of sliced apples and cheese on top of the sage for extra flavor and texture.
- Spread Apple Butter on Remaining Bread: Add apple butter to the buttered side of the remaining slice of bread.
- Close and Press: Place the second slice of bread on top, apple butter side down, then close the panini lid to press the sandwich together.
- Cook the Panini: Grill the sandwich for 3-5 minutes until the bread becomes crispy and golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve Warm: Remove the panini from the maker and serve immediately to enjoy warm, melty flavors.
Notes
- Use sharp cheddar for a bold, tangy flavor that pairs well with apple and sage.
- Thinly slicing the apples helps them cook slightly and blend with the melted cheese textures.
- If you don’t have a panini maker, a skillet with a heavy lid or a grill press can work as an alternative.
- Leftover turkey can be used to make this sandwich a great way to repurpose dinner leftovers.
- Adjust cooking time based on your panini maker’s heat settings to avoid burning.
